Sanford's teaching experience includes piano and music instructor in both jazz and classical music, and church music director/organist at a local church. As a piano and music instructor, he teaches students on a one-on-one and group setting. He particularly enjoys teaching children. He also taught music theory and composition as an adjunct music instructor at a local community college for several years.

His instruction methodology includes piano technique, ear training, music theory, sight reading, jazz improvisation and exposure to playing at recitals.

All his students are given goals to work towards. The nature of the goals he sets for his students is performance at group recitals. For his jazz piano students, once the students learn a jazz piece, he has them play the piece they learned while he accompanies them on acoustic bass or bass guitar. All his jazz students are thrilled to have another instrumentalist accompany them while they play.

He is currently heading up a ten-piece jazz ensemble at a La Mesa music studio. The group consists of both young and older students.
