About
Jamal is a pianist, flautist, and composer. His musical journey began in elementary school, where he was exposed to Duke Ellington’s “It Don’t Mean A Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing)” during music class. This song fostered his initial love for music and inspired him to take his first steps towards becoming a musician! He studied Music Composition at the University of Oregon: School of Music & Dance and performed in a variety of ensembles throughout his academic career, including wind ensembles, orchestras, chamber ensembles, jazz bands, jazz combos, choirs, and gamelan ensembles. Jamal has received recognition from his peers and instructors for his musicality, including Outstanding Musicianship Awards from the Mt. Hood Jazz Festival and Oregon Episcopal School.
Jamal has spent most of his career serving those from diverse and underrepresented populations. He is passionate about making music education accessible to all students, regardless of their socioeconomic status. Jamal has been teaching music lessons for the past 11 years, whether it be private piano lessons, music production courses at local community centers, or jazz appreciation presentations at cultural events.
Jamal is often described as kind-hearted, compassionate, patient, and humorous. He values developing a positive rapport with his students, creating a fun and safe learning environment for them to express themselves within. He celebrates his students’ accomplishments during every lesson, no matter how big or small. Jamal tailors each lesson towards his students’ personal interests and goals, as he believes that it is imperative for musicians to play music that personally resonates with them, whether it be classical, jazz, pop, hip-hop, or even Disney songs! Jamal strives to foster an appreciation of music within his students, while also building upon their self-confidence and having a few laughs along the way!
Fun facts: Jamal’s favorite classical composers are Chopin and Ravel! In his spare time, he enjoys playing board games, tending to his bonsai trees, and spending time with his family.
