Jamael Dean was born in Bakersfield, California, where he began playing piano at the age of 8 years old. He began his musical journey through the help of his grandfather, who is a jazz drummer, and has recorded for many recording artists. Jamael started performing professionally at the age of 12, and, since then, has gone on to work with artists such as Andre 3000, Kamasi Washington, Anderson Paak, Thundercat, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Keturah, and many more in addition to leading his own bands, and recording projects. He has studied under the likes of Eric Reed, Bill Cunliffe, Gerald Clayton, Edward Simon, Walter Smith III, Reggie Workman, Buster Williams, Randy Weston, Ambrose Akinmusire, and more through the highschool he attended names Los Angeles County High School For The Arts (LACHSA) and college, The New School (Mannes School of Music) in Manhattan New York. Jamael has taught students since the age of 16 when he started with the Thelonious Monk High School All Star Band which consisted of 1 student for each instrument in a standard jazz combo chosen from highschoolers throughout the country to travel and teach at other schools. Since then, Jamael has been teaching for 10 years, and upon graduation college, has gone on to travel the world both with his band and as a part of other bands. Jamael is a patient, engaging teacher who is well versed in all types of music but has a specialty in jazz, blues, rnb, hiphop, pop, and improvisation. In his freetime, Jamael enjoys reading, astronomy, and capturing live recordings of nature and city life to further inspire his musical ideas.
