About
Will Quie is a firm believer in the power of music as source of inspiration and transformation. Born and raised in Saint Paul Minnesota, Will took on a daily guitar practice at the age of 8 and never looked back. At 13, Will was a finalist at the State Fair Talent show, performing solo guitar and voice at the Grandstand. Graduating from the music department of Saint Paul Conservatory for Performing Arts (SPCPA) high school, Will continued his jazz training throughout college, studying at Oberlin Conservatory and graduating from Lawrence University and Conservatory in 2023. At conservatory, Will had the privilege of being the personal student of acclaimed jazz musicians including Steve Peplin, Bill Carrothers and Bobby Ferrazza. After graduating and returning to Minnesota, Will quickly became a staple of the local Twin Cities music scene, performing across many genres and venues. Notably, Will is a longstanding member of the jazz fusion quartet Waterline, as well as the blues rock group Flatwound. On Sunday mornings, Will is the resident guitarist for Pilgrim Baptist Church, the oldest African American Gospel church in the Twin Cities. Will has also performed regularly with Big Mike Mothershed, The Sounds of Blackness and Pierre Lewis of the Commodores, as well as many other local artists. Outside of his work as a professional guitarist, Will teaches beginner to expert level guitar as well as intermediate drums, bass, vocals and songwriting. Outside of his musical pursuits, Will has a great deal of experience working with youth both as a longtime wilderness trip guide (YMCA Camp Widjiwagan) and as a K-12 special education teacher (Great River Montessori). Will is open to teaching all ages and considers himself a lifelong student who is eager to not only impart knowledge but also a love of the learning process itself. "Music is not a means to an end" remarks Will, "but a way in which we can get to know ourselves better: what we like, how we learn, how we feel, etc." Will remains dedicated first and foremost to the interests of his students, being experienced in a wide array of genres including, Rock, Blues, Jazz, Country, RnB, Soul, Funk and more. When he is not on a gig, you might find Will sitting with a book of science fiction or philosophy, perhaps with his favorite mug of green tea steaming away.
