About
Raúl Najera is a guitarist and composer based in Austin, Texas. Originally from San Antonio, Raúl began teaching himself to play the guitar at the age of twelve, inspired by contemporary indie rock bands.
Raúl is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Music and International Studies with a minor in Spanish at Southwestern University in Georgetown, where he studies classical guitar under Dr. David Asbury. He has made instructional videos on classical guitar pieces, contributing to the university's YouTube channel. Raúl performs with the Southwestern University Guitar Ensemble and tours the U.S. as the guitarist and songwriter for his emo/rock band, Phonefoot. His musical influences range from Fernando Sor and Leo Brouwer to Nick Drake and various modern indie artists.
With four years of teaching experience, Raul has worked one-on-one with teens and adults, from first-timers to advanced players. He believes in helping students develop a strong technical foundation through their favorite styles and genres, and learning to express that creatively. His lessons are flexible and rooted in each student's unique musical goals.
Outside of teaching and performing, Raul competes as a collegiate hurdler on his university's track and field team. He enjoys writing original music, collaborating with other artists, and sharing his love of guitar with students of all backgrounds.
