Derek is originally from Northeast New Jersey and learned of his talent at 6 years old, when his Uncle Roger handed him a harmonica and let him join his band at a family party. He showed interest in classical music since 1st grade and started learning piano, singing and drums in elementary school. Throughout middle school and high school Derek has played drums and guitar for school orchestra and jazz band, and continued to study music at Rutgers University.
Taking a new focus on electric guitar, he performed at various gigs throughout North Jersey and NYC, Derek has enjoyed playing in rock, metal, punk, blues as well as folk bands.
Derek has been a successful music teacher for the past 10 years, prioritizing the fundamentals as well as discipline in his teaching. Students as young as 4 years old have learned to count rhythm, sing, and write music theory while having fun learning.
